Summary of our detailed Axiom QR Premium Dog Basket review:

This is one practical pet basket. This may not transform into a shoulder bag or backpack like the BarkBay All-In-One pet basket or the PetSafe Solvit Tagalong baskets, but it does have a different trick up its sleeve.

It can be converted from a front-loading pet basket to a rear-loading one, just by pressing the quick release button! This will be handy once your pup grows too heavy for your bike’s handlebars to handle – just move the basket to the back (bike rack needs to be purchased separately though).

You may not think it at first, but choosing the best pet basket can be a stressful experience. Toy breed owners may not run into this problem because toy breeds are going to remain tiny and will fit in the same pet basket for years. However, if you’ve got a small or medium dog breed, they’ll eventually outgrow their favorite pet bike basket.

Before the Axiom QR, pet owners either needed to buy a second, bigger basket, or just buy a bigger (and more expensive) basket in the first place. For many, this may not be the ideal solution.

Fortunately, Axiom’s dual function pet basket came into the picture. Now, pet owners like you can simply buy this basket. And when your pup finally grows up, you can just move the basket from the handlebar to your bike’s rear rack!

Advantages of the Axiom QR Premium Pet Basket

Favorite feature #1: Dual mounting system

This basket is designed with flexibility in mind. Pets are going to grow bigger and heavier, and this basket will help accommodate their growth (up to 55 pounds).

For fur babies under 8 pounds, the basket can go in front. The handlebar bracket is quick release and fits 25.4mm up to 31.8mm handlebars. Additionally, handlebar safety straps are also included to help stabilize the basket.

When your pet grows beyond 8 pounds, you can then move the basket to the back. You’d need to purchase a rear rack separately. But once you have that, you can just pop the spring-loaded universal rack attachment in the bottom of the basket. This makes mounting the basket to the rack a quick 2-second job!

Favorite feature #2: Cleaning ain’t a problem

This basket is made with solid steel. Plus, it’s coated with vinyl, so cleaning it isn’t going to be a problem. When your basket gets dirty, you can just hose it down, and that will be the end of it.

Favorite feature #3: Anti-microbial padded liner

The padded liner at the bottom of the basket is anti-microbial. This means you don’t need to worry about the basket smelling like dirty feet or fur at the end of your ride. Your dogs are also going to love laying down on it because it’s a thick padding. So, they’re not going to feel the steel mesh on their ribs.

Favorite feature #4: Lifetime warranty

We truly appreciate the fact that Axiom includes a lifetime guarantee on their products. This speaks volumes about how they stand behind the quality of their products.

As consumers, this helps make our job of choosing the perfect bike basket so much easier. So, when you do buy this basket, make sure you keep the original proof of purchase so you can make a warranty claim if you encounter any issues later on.

Favorite feature #5: Safety isn’t a concern

Just like other pet baskets, this Axiom also has a tether leash inside which you can attach to your dog’s collar or harness. This helps secure the dog to the basket and prevents him from jumping out.

However, in addition to this, Axiom also added a top cage that basically locks your dog’s body inside the basket, but keeps his head out. This means he gets to enjoy the view throughout your ride!

Oh, and if you’re not too worried about your dog jumping out, you can just remove the top cage.

A Few Disadvantages

I think this is a fantastic pet bike basket, but it does have a few negatives.

Disadvantage #1: No sunshade

Some pet owners have no use for sunshade, but it’s always a nice option to have. Some dogs can get sensitive when exposed to too much sun. And, of course, when it rains unexpectedly, your dogs will get a bit of protection, too.

Disadvantage #2: No fabric liner included

The basket is solidly made, but the lack of fabric liner is just a bit sad. Other baskets prioritize the comfort of their precious cargo by using faux sheepskin or Sherpa cloth. The upside is you’re free to add any liner of your choice. So, if you want to use real fur or real leather, then go for it!

Disadvantage #3: No pockets

Pockets are nice to have. You can put your water bottle, your dog’s toys, keys, etc. in pockets. But since this basket doesn’t come with one, you may need to bring an extra backpack when you go for a ride with your dog.

Actual User Reviews

Here’s what other users say about this versatile 2-in-1 pet basket:

I love how I can easily switch the basket from my bike’s handlebars to the rear rack. When I ride down bumpy roads, it’s important for me to control the bike a hundred percent. With the basket in front, it makes steering a little bit harder. So, I like how I can just move the bike from the front to the back in just a few seconds. The quick release handles really work like a charm!
When I got this basket, I was a bit disappointed to find out it came ‘naked.’ I took my dog out for a quick ride one morning and he was shivering because it got cold real quick. So, I decided to manually sew on a nice, thick blanket on the basket, and my dog’s been a happy rider ever since! The top cage is a great safety feature too because it prevents my dog from jumping out whenever he sees other small animals nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will this basket work on any bike rack?

Yes, any rear rack will do. The spring-loaded quick-release handles at the bottom of the basket makes it easy for you to pop the basket on or off. Also, since it’s spring-loaded, it can fit several sizes of bike racks.

  • My dog is 50 pounds, can I let him ride this basket?

If he comfortably fits inside the basket (the dimensions are 16”L x 11.8”W x 7.1”H), then you can bring him on your next ride. If he’s too big, you can try removing the top cage so he sits comfortably inside. If he’s still too big, then perhaps a bike trailer may be the best option for your dog.

  • Will my dog’s nails get caught on the basket?

Probably, yes. So, it’s a great idea to add some lining inside the basket. This protects your dog from cold air and stops his nails from getting caught, too.

Should you buy the Axiom QR Dual Function Premium Pet Basket?

Yes, you should, especially if you’ve got a bigger pup. This pet basket is sold at a competitive price which is surprising considering they offer a lifetime warranty on this thing. Durability won’t be an issue thanks to its solid steel construction. So, you'll definitely be keeping this basket for a long time (unless, of course, your fur baby outgrows it!).
