Summary of our detailed Solvit Houndabout Trailer review:

The HoundAbout aluminum pet bike trailer is a fine demonstration of PetSafe’s dedication to quality and customer satisfaction. The durable and lightweight frame makes it a breeze to pull behind your bike on long rides.

The lowered frame makes it extremely accessible to elderly and sick pets, so they can easily get onboard and enjoy the ride. Don’t forget to keep the sunroof wide open, so your fur baby can take in all the sights, sounds and smells around him.

When your fur baby’s no longer as athletic as he once was and running long distances brings him pain instead of joy, then it’s time to invest in a good-quality pet trailer.

Our team has reviewed pet trailers for dogs as small as 50 pounds all the way up to 165 pounds. This PetSafe Solvit HoundAbout trailer lies somewhere in the middle in terms of maximum pet load at about 110 pounds. Read on for our full review!

Advantages of the HoundAbout Large Aluminum Pet Trailer

Favorite feature #1: Foldable and easy to assemble

Other manufacturers don’t pay a lot of attention to the user manual. They think assembling their trailers is a simple matter, but not everyone’s got a grasp for technical details. PetSafe is one of the good guys – they actually have a usable manual. You can check it here for this particular product.

As you can see, this manual will help you set up and assemble your trailer quickly. They’ve even included instructions on how to fold the trailer for storage. Plus, a whole bunch of care instructions you’re not going to find on other manuals.

Favorite feature #2: Rust-proof aluminum frame

The HoundAbout trailer actually comes in two variations – an aluminum frame and a steel frame. The aluminum frame is lighter and slightly more expensive (about 10 to 20 bucks more) than the steel frame model.

I think the additional fee is minimal enough that most users prefer the aluminum model. And it’s not surprising at all considering everyone would prefer pulling a lighter trailer behind their bicycles.

Favorite feature #3: Oversized sunroof is awesome

I love how the sunroof is so large that most dogs can easily stick their heads over the top so they can enjoy the view. For smaller dogs, you can put extra cushions to raise the floor a bit so they too can look outside. If you’ll notice, dogs on HoundAbout’s have this goofy look on their faces. I think that’s the look of pure bliss!

Favorite feature #4: Lowered frame for easy access

This is a common enough problem for elderly and sick dogs. Big trailers are usually tall enough that most dogs need to jump to get inside. For dogs with arthritis and other similar mobility issues, this poses a tough challenge. Fortunately, for this HoundAbout, getting on and off the main cabin (via the rear door) is not an issue. You need not worry about aggravating their joint pain.

Favorite feature #5: Lifetime warranty

Yep, lifetime warranty. It’s quite amazing, really. I’m a huge fan of PetSafe products – they use high-quality materials to ensure their products last for a loooong time. Hence, they’re not afraid to offer a lifetime warranty; they know their products will last the test of time.

Favorite feature #6: Pockets!

Who doesn’t want pockets in their trailers? I love pockets! I’m sure your dog wouldn’t care one way or another. But for us pet moms and dads, pockets can mean the difference between a comfortable cycling adventure and an inconvenient one. Without pockets, you’d most likely need to bring an extra bag or throw the stuff inside the main cabin (at the risk of getting trampled).

A Few Disadvantages

Disadvantage #1: No suspension

I find it surprising (and disappointing) that PetSafe chose not to add suspension to their tires. I mean, the trailer is still comfortable for most dogs, but it would have been a much nicer experience if there was full suspension.

Tip: If you want a big-dog pet trailer with full suspension, check out the PetEgo Comfort Bike Wagon.

Disadvantage #2: The front and side windows could be bigger

I’m quite disappointed with the size of the front and side windows. To be honest, I find both of them a bit small. It does let the air in but it’s not going to bring about the best viewing experience for your canine passenger. Perhaps that’s why they made the sunroof extra-large – to compensate for the small windows.

Actual User Reviews

Here’s what other users are saying about the HoundAbout pet bike trailer:

My Siberian husky is getting on in years. When he was younger, he had boundless energy and had no problems jogging or running alongside me. But now, I noticed he gets tired pretty quickly, like 3 minutes later he’ll need to stop and catch his breath. So, I decided to get this trailer for him. I didn’t want his joints to get injured. That said, here’s what I like about this trailer: the giant sunroof (my boy absolutely loves it – he never ever lies down!), the low floor so he can get in and out easily, and the overall construction of this thing. It looks awesome and well worth every penny I paid for it!
My son and I love to ride our bicycles on weekends. We’ve got several awesome bike paths in our city and we thought why not buy a trailer so we can bring our 2 labradoodles along? We’re so glad we chose this trailer over the 2-in-1 convertible trailers/strollers. We don’t really run so no need for a stroller. We’re avid cyclists though, so this is the perfect carrier for them for when we ride! And yes, they both fit comfortably within the cabin.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does this trailer fold flat?

Yes, it does. You’d need to remove the support rod and remove the wheels. Then you can fold down the sides.

  • Can I let my dog in through the front window?

Well, the front window’s really small, so unless you have a tiny dog, you really should let him enter from the rear door.

  • Can I replace the cushion with something else?

Of course you can. The cushion is removable, so feel free to replace it with something you think is better for your dog(s).

  • Will my dog feel constricted inside?

I don’t think so. When you let them in the rear door, you can just open the sunroof so they can immediately see what’s out there on the other side. Of course, each dog is different, so you may need to get him used to getting inside first before you finally take him out on the trailer!

  • Without the suspension, will my dog have a rough ride?

Well, if you stick to paved roads and avoid rocky, unpaved ones, your dog will be just fine. Also, make sure the wheels are inflated properly as it will help cushion your dog’s ride.

Should you buy the PetSafe Solvit Houndabout Aluminum Dog Trailer?

Yes, you should definitely consider this pet trailer for your fur baby. It’s made by one of the most trusted brands in the pet industry, and with their promise of lifetime warranty, you’re definitely in good hands. This pet trailer has been awarded Amazon’s Choice for quite some time now and has a solid 4.4 star rating. That said, you can’t go wrong with this trailer!
